Leader in Homeland Security Imaging Products
BACKGROUND

Since the shoe bomber incident in 2001, the TSA has required she inspection at the concourse checkpoint which is an addition burden on passengers and the TSA infrastructure. A preferred solution would be to have automatic shoe inspection without the need to remove shoes and associated with the necessary visit to a passenger screening portal.

Shoe Scanner

The Solution

TSS has been developing a novel mmWave based scanner that can scan for threat materials in the shoe of a passenger while the passenger stands in passenger scanning portal. The shoe scanner would be concealed under the floor of the portal and would scan for threat materials within the second or so of whole body imaging. The shoe scanner would utilize some of the inverse scattering reconstruction technology proposed for a full body mmWave scanner that exploits multi-static imaging for the purpose of material classification.

Status

After performing preliminary testing with a prototype mmWave antenna array, TSS and its partner IDSS have submitted a proposal for development to the TSA and are currently waiting for a funding decision. The company has applied for US patent protection for the underlying technology.
